Breast Cancer Awareness Month

We've come a long way. Years ago, a cancer diagnosis would usually result in death. The prognosis these days is not so grim. There are still very aggressive forms of cancer out there, but the good news is that there are more options. The other good news is that detection has improved, thus improving the odds of surviving and overcoming it.

I am optimistic that one day we will see a cure. In the meantime, it gives me so much hope knowing that a woman CAN BEAT breast cancer.

Latest Advancements in Science

In the 2010 May issue of Reader's Digest (pages 84-97) there is an article entitled: "Next Big Things. 25 Ideas, inventions, and gadgets that will improve your life."
I was so excited to share some of those things with you. Here are some of the things listed:
1) Bionic eyeball. It works by transmitting images wirelessly from a tiny camera attached to a pair of glasses to a microchip on the eyeball. The chip stimulates retinal nerve cells, which then sends the pictures to the brain. It can't restore FULL vision, but provides enough so that a patient can walk a familiar path without the aid of a guide dog or cane. (May get FDA approval as soon as 3 years!)
2)No-drill dental work. Icon, a new treatment for early cavities, works by injecting liquid resin into the affected tooth. It reaches the decay faster than traditional methods. Once inside the problem spot, it solidifies and stops the cavity from progressing. There is no anesthetic or drilling! It's already on the market in Europe and will be widely available in the U.S. this year.
3)Do-It-Yourself Glasses. Josh Silver, an Oxford professor, spent 10 years to develop glasses he could adjust himself. He figured out silicone oil was the key. He filled two flexible membranes with the oil and encased them in hard plastic. All you have to do is twist a platic dial on each lens to add more liquid, which changes the shape of the lens. Now we have a pair of glasses that last forever! We should see them in the next few years.
4)Needle-Free Vaccines. Boston University researchers are working on a new way of inoculation. The vaccine is deposited inside nanoparticles, each no bigger than a human pore. These particles are then applied to a foil-backed film that is placed on the skin (like a patch). A mild electrical charge from a small device is used to drive the particles into the skin. A pilot study is under way.

Missing Girl Found After 5 Days

This is the best news I have heard in a long time. This 11 year-old girl was missing in an area of Florida known to be infested with alligators. That wasn't the only obstacle this girl had. She also has Asperger's Syndrome! It was truly a miracle. The following is the article I found online that explains all the details of this remarkable story!

The Climb by Miley Cirus

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG2zyeVRcbs

Miley Cirus has had her moments where I just have to say, "Why? How could your parents let you go that route?" However, this song is such a deep song. The first time I heard it I was brought to tears. I love the words and I want it to be the message for all of you! I want to stress that no matter what we may all go through in life, it's the journey that takes you to the goal that makes you who you are.

The Healthcare Debate

I wanted to comment on the live coverage of the Healthcare Summit that occurred yesterday. I was folding clothes in the comfort of my home and watched it on t.v. like many other Americans. In listening to the comments and taking in all the information it made me think about my own situation and how blessed we are as a nation. We have freedom of speech. We have a democracy. We have many Christian leaders. Although we disagree on solutions to problems, we ALL agree that there is a problem with the Healthcare system in the United States. That is definitely a step in the right direction.

I was pleased to see a very calm and respectful environment. I am not sure if anyone changed their position on things, but perhaps some "seeds were planted" and we can move forward.

Haiti Miracles

I can't even post this without tearing up right now. With all the horrific things I have seen on the news, I have also seen some miraculous things happen in Haiti. I have seen a two year-old pulled out of the rubble three days after the earthquake still alive and doing well. I have seen a pregnant woman found alive and well after four days without any food or water. Both are doing fine. The following are the only links I could find of these modern-day miracles!
